An outbreak of a rare type of Ebola has led to 134 suspected deaths in eastern Congo and Uganda. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, meaning it needs a coordinated response. The WHO team in Congo said the outbreak could last at least another two months.
This rare Ebola is known as the Bundibugyo virus. Congo said the first person died from the virus on April 24th, but it took weeks to confirm it, so the virus spread without being noticed. There are no approved medicines or vaccines for the Bundibugyo virus.
On May 19th, the WHO expressed concern over the “scale and speed” of the outbreak. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus mentioned that cases have appeared in urban areas, some healthcare workers have died, and many people are moving around. However, the WHO said the risk of global spread is low.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the U.S. government is focusing on funding 50 emergency clinics in affected areas. The U.S. has pledged to contribute $23 million.
