The Addition Hills village in Mandaluyong City, part of the densely populated Philippine capital region, Manila, launched an unusual antidengue campaign on February 19th. Residents will earn one peso for every five mosquitoes or larvae they capture—dead or alive.
The initiative in Addition Hills village comes amid an alarming rise in dengue cases. Critics warned the strategy could encourage residents to breed mosquitoes, but village leader Carlito Cernal said the campaign would end once cases decline.
In Quezon City, near the capital, 1,769 residents have been infected, resulting in 10 deaths, mostly children. Officials in Quezon City village are considering releasing frogs to eat mosquitoes. As of February 1st, the Philippines recorded 28,234 cases, a 40% increase compared to the same period last year.
The dengue surge came unexpectedly early, ahead of the June rainy season. Officials attribute the rise to irregular downpours creating mosquito breeding grounds.
