On January 6th, Brazil announced that Indonesia has been officially admitted as a full member of the BRICS bloc of developing economies. Brazil is the group’s presiding nation. In a statement, the Brazilian government welcomed the addition, highlighting Indonesia’s role as the largest economy and most populous nation in Southeast Asia. “Indonesia shares a commitment to reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to South-South cooperation,” the statement noted.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the membership as a strategic move to bolster collaboration and cooperation with other developing countries. “This step aligns with principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development,” it stated on January 7th. BRIC was formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The group became BRICS when South Africa joined in 2010. BRICS was established as a counterbalance to the Group of Seven (G7) of developed nations. The name originates from a 2000s economic term describing emerging nations projected to lead the global economy by 2050.
