A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28th at 12:50 local time. Its epicenter was 16km northwest of Sagaing, near Mandalay, a city of 1.5 million people. The tremor caused widespread devastation and was felt as far as Thailand and southwest China. As of April 7th, Myanmar’s military-led government reported over 3,500 deaths and more than 5,000 injuries. In Thailand, at least 22 people have died.
The disaster worsens Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis. Ongoing civil conflict has already made it difficult to get aid. Power outages, fuel shortages, and poor communication have further hindered relief work. The lack of heavy machinery has slowed rescue operations, forcing many to dig through rubble by hand in extreme heat exceeding 40°C. Concerns about potential hunger and disease outbreaks have been growing, adding to the challenges in one of the world’s most difficult regions for humanitarian assistance.
